He moved towards national integration in colonial India and his famous speech in Chicago in 1893 remained as he said.

To pay tribute to his many contributions to the country, the Government of India declared his birthday in 1974 as National Youth Day and it has been celebrated ever since. As the government rightly said in 1984, "Swamiji's philosophy and the ideals for which he lived and worked can be a source of inspiration for Indian Youth Day."

The main goal is to spread rational thinking among the youth who believe in the future of the country. It was hoped that the youth would rise to the occasion, fight for the right like Swami Vivekananda and build their inner strength. Numerous programs are organized in schools and colleges, where the minds of the youth are on this day. Students are encouraged to concentrate on their spirituality.
